Notes: Vanity plates, initially called "special license plates", were first authorized on July 1, 1968. There was a $25 annual fee in additional the annual registration fee, and plates could have "any single letter or combination of letters, not to exceed five in number".

Notes: Gold border and sticker box added. Sticker box added "PLACE STICKER HERE" circa 1971. House Bill 734 was introduced and passed in 1978, which amended Delaware Code to allow up to six characters, and the use of a hyphen, which counted as one character. Suffixes "SR", "JR", and "III" in letters half the size of the owner's initials are permitted. This amendment also specified that all numbers had to follow all letters on the plate. The ampersand was allowed starting December 1990; "B&O RR" (below) was the first plate allowed with ampersand.

Beveled edges around plate added around March 2010. According to a May 14, 2024 District Court decision, the Delaware DMV was barred from issuing any new vanity tags and was barred from recalling any existing vanity tags. The Delaware DMV may not issue any vanity tags until Delaware law is amended to be in accordance with the First Amendment.
