Notes: Moped plates were first authorized on May 26, 1977 by House Bill 10. The legislation defined mopeds as "a pedal bicycle having two tandem wheels, either of which is over twenty inches in diameter, and having a helper motor, characterized in that the maximum piston displacement is less than 55 cc, rated at no more than 1.5 brake horsepower, and that the maximum speed does not exceed 25 miles per hour. All registrations are three years and the cost to renew every three years was $5.00. The original batch of plates from 1977 have screened "DEC 80" in screened sticker box. Moped stickers are smaller than passenger stickers (1 1/8" x 1"). DMV replacement plates have stickered-on numbers.
