Fire Department
Ambulance, Fire Department, and Rescue all came out in 1974, all red on white, all 6" x 12". These plates were typically made at the DelDOT sign shop; it's unknown if Demco ever made these.
There are two possible formats for Fire Department plates: FD#-# and FD#-#-#. The first number is the station number; the second number is the vehicle identifier; the third number (if any) is the vehicle number of that vehicle identifier.
For New Castle County: 1 is Field Piece, 2 - 5 is Engine (number depending on size), 6 is Rescue, 7 is Ladder, 8 is Chief Unit, 9 is Fire Police and 10 is unknown. Thanks to Ethan Riccio for this information.
For Kent and Sussex Counties: 1 - 4 is Engine, 5 and 7 are Tanker, 6 is Rescue, 7 is Ladder, 8 is Command, and 9 and 10 are Utility units. Thanks to Bill Pippin for this information.
Examples:
- FD25-7 is Rescue for Talleyville Fire Company (New Castle County)
- FD45-5 is Tanker for Clayton Fire Company (Kent County)
- FD79-8-2 is a second Command vehicle for Gumboro Fire Company (Sussex County)
